Research interest. The main part of my research has focused on parasitoid and parasitic insects from the orders Coleoptera and Strepsiptera, including understanding of their biological and ecological requirements. I have been working on the taxonomy of both extant and fossil wedge-shaped beetles Ripiphoridae (Coleoptera), notably of the subfamily Ripiphorinae which members are obligatory parasitoids of wasps and bees with emphasis on their distribution and host-associations. In addition, I am also interested in taxonomy, faunistics, behaviour and bionomics of the suborder Stylopidia (Strepsiptera) – also obligatory parasites of wasps and bees.

Projects/Grants/Collections. In 1992 I participated in research of invertebrates of the Pálava Biosphere Reserve – namely of Stylopidae (Strepsiptera) and Meloidae (Coleoptera): Batelka J., 1993: Report for the Administration of the Pálava Biosphere Reserve, Mikulov (MS), 4 pp. (Deposited in the Administration of PBR).

Since 2006 till 2011 I participated in the “UAE Insect Project” led by Antonius van Harten. The project was established by His Royal High Sheikh Tahnoun Bin Zayed al Nahyan in order to research arthropod biodiversity of the United Arab Emirates.

In 2008 I was awarded by SYNTHESYS grant (Synthesis of systematic resources, application GB-TF-4043) to study collection of Ripiphoridae housed in The Natural History Museum (London).

My collection of Palaearctic Aculeata (about 5000 specimens) is deposited in Národní Muzeum, Praha.
